Lesson Plan: Quiz Show Review

12/2/05

Purpose: To review Living and Nonliving things, Plants, and Animals

Description of Learners: Mrs. Harvey’s first grade class is an energetic group who likes to be involved in their learning process. While most of the students function at grade level, there are a few students who function well above level.

Standards Addressed:

NSES CONTENT STANDARD C:
As a result of activities in grades K-4, all students should develop understanding of

·         The characteristics of organisms

·         Life cycles of organisms

·         Organisms and environments

Learner Objectives:

  • Students will demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of the concepts covered over the past several weeks.
  • students will work at developing cooperative group skills

Materials:

White Boards, Dry Erase Markers, Questions on Note cards, Game board, Prizes (optional)

Procedure:

We will play a review game with the students that allows them to work cooperatively to answer questions and demonstrate their knowledge.

  • Students will be assigned a group- groups will be assigned by grouping students according to who they are sitting around. There will be 4-5 students in each group. There will be minimal movement in order to ensure classroom management.
  • Each group will be given a white board and a dry-erase marker
  • Groups will take turns selecting point values from the game board. Each point value will have a corresponding question with it.
  • After the question is read, each group will have the opportunity to discuss their question and write their answer on their white board. When all groups are ready, we will have them hold up their answers. Each group will receive a points for each correct answer.
  • If the students pick a point value and receive a CHALLENGE QUESTION, only their group may answer that question. If they do not know the answer. The first group to raise their hand may steal.
  • Points will be kept track of on a scoreboard. The winning group (and all other participants) will receive a prize.

Assessment:

Because this game is in “quiz show” format, we can assess what the students know by how they are answering questions. The point of the lesson is to see what they know, so that we can identify what misconceptions may need to be cleared up.

As teachers, we will not be teaching any specific content. However, this lesson is a good test of our classroom management skills. The students will be excited to be playing a game. It is our job to make sure that the classroom environment remains one where the students can learn from one another. We can assess our classroom management skills throughout the course of the game. We should make sure that after each question the class is settled before we continue.
